Cameroon adopted and started implementing in 2016, the ‘universal test and treat’ (UTT) guidelines to fast-track progress towards the 95-95-95 ambitious targets to end the HIV epidemic. UTT has shown inconsistent results elsewhere and has not yet been assessed in Cameroon. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of this novel approach on the quality of care and health outcomes of people living with HIV (PLHIV).

HIV remains an epidemic of major public health importance in Cameroon but a decline in HIV prevalence has been observed according to population-based surveys conducted in 2004, 2011 and 2018. We sought to review current evidence for declining HIV prevalence despite increasing survival owing to ‘universal test and treat’ and to explore the reason for the decrease, particularly the role of behavioural change.

The Effects of HIV Infection on the Immune Response to Malaria Among Pregnant Women in Kumba, Southwest Cameroon: Protocol for a Cross-sectional Study

Malaria and HIV, 2 of the world’s deadliest diseases, share a lot of territory in sub-Saharan Africa.

This study seeks to investigate the effect of HIV on the immune response to malaria infection among pregnant women in Kumba in the southwest region (SWR) of Cameroon. The study aims to determine the prevalence of malaria infection, assess the occurrence of Plasmodium falciparum genetic diversity, and evaluate the antibody (immunoglobulin [Ig]G and IgM: apical membrane antigen-1 [AMA1], merozoite surface protein [MSP]1, MSP2, MSP3, and erythrocyte-binding antigen [EBA]175) and cytokine (interleukin [IL]-10, tumor necrosis factor alpha [TNF-α], and interferon gamma [IFNγ]) response to malaria infection among pregnant women with and without HIV in Kumba.

Malaria and HIV Co-Infection among Pregnant Women in Africa: Prevalence, Effect on Immunity and Clinical Management: Review

Malaria during pregnancy remains a problem in Africa. Mother-to-child transmission is associated with several adverse outcomes, such as low birth-weight, stillbirth, anemia, and immune dysregulation. Even though the current option B+ treatment plan effectively prevents MTCT of HIV, mother-to-child malaria transmission remains a problem. Studies in other areas have shown that HIV-exposed children are more susceptible to opportunistic infection when compared to unexposed children. Therefore, studies examining exposed children over a more extended period, to determine their susceptibility to malaria infection and their immune response to malaria over time, need to be carried out. Nonetheless, studies looking at the efficacy of vaccine candidates for malaria in pregnancy need to be carried out.

Traditional medicine (TM) has maintained its popularity in most developing countries. The use of TM in the treatment of illnesses such as malaria is a common practice that began in pre-historic times. Aim: This research sought to investigate the knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding the use of TM to treat malaria in the Buea Health District, Cameroon

Clinical teaching is the most important part of nursing education and the role preceptors play in clinical teaching and learning cannot be over emphasised. Students require a conducive clinical environment to allow the application of theory to practice. This study sought to describe preceptors’ experiences and views of preceptees regarding the clinical learning environment.

In Cameroon, malaria contributes significantly to the morbidity and mortality of children under 5 years old. In order to encourage adequate treatment-seeking in health facilities, user fee exemptions for malaria treatment have been instituted. However, many children are still brought to health facilities in the late stage of severe malaria. This study sought to determine the factors affecting the hospital treatment-seeking time of guardians of children under 5 years within the context of this user fee exemption.

Research has shown that patients fail to adhere to ART and TB treatment due to the long duration of both therapies, side effects, and forgetfulness. Objective. To assess the role of the double-way and single-way SMS on adherence to HIV and TB treatment. Materials and Methods. A randomized controlled trial among adult HIV and TB patients on treatment at the Buea Regional and Kumba District Hospitals, South West Region, Cameroon, was conducted. Participants were randomly allocated to the control, single-way, and double-way SMS intervention groups. HIV and TB participants were followed independently for a period of 6 months and 3 months, respectively. Baseline and post-intervention data were collected and analyzed using the chi-square and Student’s t-tests with statistical significance set at p < 0.05.

cervical cancer is the fourth commonest cancer of women world-wide with increasing incidence in developing countries. This study determined the prevalence and assessed risk factors associated with precancerous cervical lesions among women in Cameroon. T

his cross-sectional study enrolled 925 women participants of a screening campaign for precancerous cervical lesions from June to November 2018 in the selected hospitals. A convenience sampling technique was used and socio-demographic, sexual and reproductive data collected from consented participants by means of self-administered questionnaire. During the gynaecologic examination, a cervical smear was collected, stained by the Papanicolaou staining technique and the results classified according to the Bethesda 2014 guidelines. Frequency, percentage, Chi square and regression analysis were conducted using SPSS version 20 and p-value considered at 0.05.
